About Mass graves at Spion Kop
The mass graves at Spion Kop (or Spioenkop) serve as a sombre physical map of the 1900 Second Boer War battlefield. Because the rocky ground was too hard to dig traditional graves during the heat of battle, the British soldiers were buried exactly where they fell—in the very trenches they had desperately tried to excavate for cover.
