About Major General Sir Edward Woodgate

Major General Sir Edward Woodgate was mortally wounded on the summit of Spion Kop during the Battle of Spion Kop on 24 January 1900. The specific location of his wounding is marked by a white memorial cross on the Spion Kop battlefield plateau. Context: Woodgate was leading the 11th Brigade in a night assault to capture the strategic hill. The Injury: On the morning of 24 January, around 08:30 hrs, a shell splinter struck him in the head above the right eye, causing a severe brain injury. Aftermath: He was carried down the hill to a dressing station and eventually moved to Mooi River, Natal, where he succumbed to his wounds on 23 March 1900.
