About Peace Monument
The Peace Monument in Vereeniging commemorates the end of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). It marks the location where the final peace negotiations took place before the formal Treaty of Vereeniging was signed in Pretoria on 31 May 1902. Location: The monument is situated in the garden in front of the Vereeniging Civic Centre on Leslie Street. Design: Created by renowned sculptor Coert Steynberg, the monument features a blue granite figure of a wounded Boer warrior. Symbolism: A stainless steel figure rising from the warrior's heart represents spiritual purification and hope, while a bronze rifle, hat, and empty bandelier signify the end of the conflict.
