The Laager Wall: Surrounding the Voortrekker Monument is a granite wall carved with a bas-relief of 64 ox-wagons. This formation symbolizes the defensive laager used during the Battle of Blood River. In South African history, a laager was a mobile fortification created by drawing wagons into a circle or square to protect people and livestock from attack. Known in Afrikaans as Die Wa-laer, it remains a powerful emblem of Voortrekker resilience and unity.
