About Irish Brigade Memorial | Ciste ar Son Briagaid Ar naGae
The Irish Brigade Memorial (Ciste ar Son Briagaid Ar naGael), originally erected on the Brixton ridge in Johannesburg near the base of the Sentech Tower, was unveiled in November 1975 to honor the Irish volunteers who fought alongside the Boers during the Anglo-Boer War. The monument featured inscriptions in Gaelic and Afrikaans, but due to urban decay and security concerns, the central structure was dismantled and relocated to Orania in 2002. Today, only the original concrete foundations, terraced steps, and outer stone berm remain at the Johannesburg site.
