About Indian War Memorial

The Indian War Memorial (also known as the Indian Army Memorial) is a sandstone obelisk located at the summit of Observatory Ridge in Johannesburg. Unveiled on 31 October 1902, it is considered the city's oldest war memorial and commemorates members of the Indian Army who died during the South African War (Anglo-Boer War) of 1899–1902. Purpose: Dedicated to the nearly 9,000 Indian non-combatants—including stretcher-bearers, farriers (nalbands), veterinary assistants, and water carriers—who served with the British forces.
