About George Harrison “The Miner” Statue

The "George Harrison" statue, more commonly known as "The Miner," is a 4-metre-tall bronze sculpture located in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was created in 1988 by sculptor Tienie Pritchard to celebrate the centenary of Johannesburg and commemorate the 1886 discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand by the prospector George Harrison. The statue is situated at George Harrison Park (previously the site of Harrison's gold claim) in the Langlaagte area of Johannesburg. An additional cast or similar iconic "Miner's statue" is also noted at the entrance of East Gate Mall.
