About Stoel Monument

On 4 September 1901, during the South African War, Colonel Harry Scobell captured Commandant J. C. Lötter, his lieutenant Pieter Wolfaardt, and most of their commando near Graaff-Reinet after being betrayed by Lewies van Niekerk, with 14 men killed and 126 taken prisoner; Lötter, famed for his “hit and run” tactics and accused of brutal reprisals against loyalists, was tried as a Cape rebel and sentenced to death, while Wolfaardt was condemned for murder and attempted murder, both executed in Middelburg in October 1901 at the site now marked by the “Stoel Monument,” later reburied together in the town’s cemetery.
