About 1820 Settler's National Monument
The 1820 Settlers National Monument, overlooking Grahamstown (Makhanda) in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, was built by Murray and Stewart (EP) Pty Ltd and designed by John Sturrock, who drew inspiration from Louis Kahn. Opened to honor the British 1820 Settlers, it also commemorates Anglo-South Africans and the English language, reflecting their lasting contribution to South African society.
