About Fort Mitchell

Fort Mitchell (originally built as Fort Michell) was a British military outpost established in the 19th century near Hogsback. Situated in the Amatola Mountains, it was constructed to guard the colonial border during the Frontier Wars with the Xhosa people. It was named after Colonel Michell of the Warwickshire regiment, who commanded British troops in the area. While the original structures no longer stand, the physical earth outline of the fort and the remnants of the first military supply road built from Fort Hare remain visible to visitors today.
