About Gideon Scheepers Memorial

During the Anglo-Boer War, Gideon Scheepers led his own commando in the Cape Midlands before being captured, tried in Graaff-Reinet for alleged war crimes, and executed by firing squad. To honor him, the Graaff-Reinet Afrikaans Cultural Society erected a memorial about 2 km from town on the Murraysburg road, near the site of his death. The monument features three local rocks supporting a stainless steel needle, symbolizing hope and faith in God: the largest rock represents the resilience of the young Afrikaner nation, while two tilted boulders signify a people suppressed but not defeated, with a fourth stone bearing the inscription.
