The Voortrekker monument, erected in 1943 about 3 km from Graaff-Reinet at the Camdeboo National Park Offices, was sculpted by Coert Steynberg and unveiled by Mrs Gustav Preller on Andries Pretorius’s birthday, 27 November. Dominated by Pretorius’s imposing figure gazing northward with his hand on a wagon wheel, the design also features Afrikaner oxen in tribute to the animals that hauled the trekkers’ wagons. The inscription recalls Pretorius’s words to Sir Harry Smith in 1848: “One day a wheel will indeed roll across our world and neither you nor I will be able to stop it.”
