The Donkin Lighthouse, established in 1861, is a National Monument located within the Donkin Reserve in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). While it no longer serves as a functional maritime beacon, it remains a central historical landmark overlooking the city and Algoa Bay. Key Historical Facts Original Structure: Initially a 7-metre octagonal brick tower. Height Increase: Raised by 9 metres in 1930 to clear city lights. Decommissioned: Replaced by the North End Light in the early 1970s. The lighthouse is a major stop on the Route 67 Heritage Trail, which features 67 pieces of public art celebrating Nelson Mandela’s years of service. It is also located near the country's largest South African flag.
