About Bisho Massacre Memorial

The Bisho massacre took place on 7 September 1992 in the Ciskei homeland (now part of South Africa’s Eastern Cape), when the Ciskei Defence Force opened fire on a protest march, killing 28 African National Congress supporters and one soldier as demonstrators attempted to enter Bisho (now Bhisho) to demand Ciskei’s reincorporation into South Africa during the final years of apartheid.
