About Holkrans Hiking Trail
The Holkrans Hiking Trail is a short, moderate loop trail spanning approximately 2 kilometres located within the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State. Commencing from the parking area at the Golden Gate Hotel and Chalets, the route takes roughly one hour to complete and is managed under the jurisdiction of South African National Parks (SANParks).
The trail features narrow paths, steep staircases, wooden footbridges attached to cliff faces, and a 10-metre unchained wooden ladder that must be climbed to navigate the rock terrain. Its primary landmark is the Holkrans Cave, a large sandstone overhang sheltering natural mountain vegetation. Hikers accessing the trail are required to pay a park conservation fee, which is payable at the nearby Glen Reenen Rest Camp or at the park entry gates.
