About Swallowtail Falls Trail
The Swallowtail Falls Trail in Hogsback, Eastern Cape, is a moderate hiking route measuring approximately 10.5 kilometres for the full circuit. Located within an indigenous Afromontane forest, the trail features key natural landmarks including the 800-year-old Big Tree, Bridal Veil Falls, Swallowtail Falls, and Madonna & Child Falls. The terrain consists of dirt paths, wooden bridges, and steep, slippery rocks near the water cascades, with an average completion time of three to four hours. Distance: ~10.5 km (6.5 miles) for the full waterfall loop. Duration: 3 to 4 hours. Difficulty: Moderate overall, but features highly technical, steep, and slippery sections near the waterfalls.
