About Melkhoutboom Cave

Melkhoutboom Cave is a prominent Later Stone Age archaeological site located in the Zuurberg Mountains within the Addo Elephant National Park of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The site is internationally renowned among archaeologists because its exceptionally dry, well-drained sediment layers preserved 6,000-year-old botanical material, making them the oldest well-preserved plant remains in Southern Africa. Location: Situated roughly 80 kilometres north of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) inside a steep, secluded ravine. Geology: Formed from the sandstones of the Cape Supergroup, which weathered over time into protective rock overhangs. Rock Art: The back wall of the cave features ancient rock paintings, though many have faded due to time. Access Restrictions: Permits are required. Entry into the cave site is strictly regulated under South African heritage legislation and typically requires specialized academic or research permits.
