About KMTNet-SAAO (KASI)

The KMTNet-SAAO node in Sutherland, South Africa, is a 1.6-metre wide-field optical telescope operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) at the South African Astronomical Observatory field station. It functions alongside two identical telescopes in Chile and Australia to provide continuous 24-hour coverage of the southern sky, primarily utilizing a 342-megapixel mosaic CCD camera to detect Earth-mass exoplanets through gravitational microlensing. When its primary target, the Galactic bulge, is not visible, the telescope shifts its monitoring schedule to secondary scientific projects, including tracking near-Earth asteroids, observing supernovae, and studying external galaxies.
