About Elephant Hall @ Letaba Rest Camp
The Elephant Hall at Letaba Rest Camp is a specialized museum located within the northern region of Kruger National Park. Situated 50 kilometres from the Phalaborwa Gate, this air-conditioned facility serves as an educational center dedicated entirely to the biology, evolution, behavior, and conservation of the African elephant. Its central attraction is the preservation and display of the massive, authentic ivory tusks belonging to the "Magnificent Seven" a group of legendary bull elephants who roamed the park during the mid-20th century.
Among these exhibits are the tusks of Joao, which includes the heaviest single tusk on record at 70 kilograms, and Shawu, who carried the longest recorded tusks at 3.17 metres. The museum features a fully mounted elephant skeleton as a centerpiece, alongside a replica of an elephant heart and informational panels detailing modern anti-poaching initiatives and research on current, living "emerging tuskers." The museum is wheelchair accessible, open daily from 08:00 to 16:00, and offers free admission to all visitors inside the rest camp.
