About Talana Museum

Talana Museum, located on the R33 Vryheid Road just outside Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, is a 20-acre heritage park situated on the site of the first major battle of the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). Its name, "Talana," is Zulu for "the shelf where precious items are stored". The museum comprises over 20 buildings with diverse historical themes: Military History: Detailed displays on the Battle of Talana, the Anglo-Zulu War, and World Wars I and II. Industrial Heritage: Home to the National Coal Mining Museum for South Africa and a dedicated glass gallery featuring pieces over 2,000 years old. Settler & Cultural History: Includes the Smith Cottage (home of Dundee’s founder, Peter Smith), a Zulu cultural village, and extensive beadwork collections. Outdoor Trails: A self-guided walking trail leads up Talana Hill, following the route of the British advance, with original forts and memorials at the summit.
