About The Market Theatre
Founded in 1976 by Mannie Manim and Barney Simon, the Market Theatre is an internationally recognized performing arts complex located in Newtown, Johannesburg. Historically dubbed the "Theatre of the Struggle," it operated as an independent, non-racial space that openly defied apartheid laws to host desegregated audiences and performances. The complex features three distinct venues—the John Kani, Barney Simon, and Laager theatres—and continues to stage premier South African plays, comedies, and festivals.
