Roodeplaat Dam Provincial Nature Reserve
About Roodeplaat Dam Provincial Nature Reserve
Roodeplaat Dam Provincial Nature Reserve is a protected conservation area located north-east of Pretoria in Gauteng, encompassing a diverse bushveld ecosystem wrapped around a large reservoir. The reserve is managed in two separate geographic zones that require independent entry gates: the southern side functions as a tranquil sanctuary designed for game viewing, birdwatching from lakeside hides, and hiking through acacia woodlands, while the northern shore serves as a hub for recreational water sports, motorboating, canoeing, and freshwater angling.
Visitors across both sectors can observe various free-roaming wildlife, including plains zebras, impalas, greater kudus, and blue wildebeests, alongside a documented population of over 250 bird species. The facility provides shaded picnic areas, brick braai structures, and basic restrooms, operating under a strict no-pets policy and a card-only transaction system at the entrance gates.
