About Voortrekker Monument
The Voortrekker Monument is a massive granite structure located on a hilltop just south of Pretoria, South Africa. It was built to commemorate the Voortrekkers (pioneers) who left the British-ruled Cape Colony during the Great Trek between 1835 and 1854. Architect: Designed by Gerard Moerdijk in an Art Deco style. The Hall of Heroes: Features a 92-metre-long Italian marble frieze—the largest in the world—depicting scenes from the Great Trek. The Cenotaph: Located on the lower level, this "empty grave" honours those who died during the Trek. It bears the inscription "Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika" (We for thee, South Africa). Solar Alignment: Every year on 16 December at exactly 12:00, a ray of sunlight shines through a hole in the roof directly onto the Cenotaph's inscription.
