About Johannesburg Art Gallery
The Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is the largest and oldest public art museum in sub-Saharan Africa, housing a collection of over 10,000 works that range from 15th-century prints to contemporary South African masterpieces. Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed Mondays). Location: Cnr Klein and King George Streets, Joubert Park, Johannesburg. Current Status: As of May 2026, many of JAG's most famous works are featured in a special "Homecoming" exhibition at the Standard Bank Art Gallery (until 31 October 2026) while the main JAG building undergoes refurbishment. The collection is remarkably diverse, featuring both international icons and celebrated local artists: International Masters: Works by Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, and Rembrandt van Rijn. South African Icons: Significant pieces by Gerard Sekoto, Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser, J.H. Pierneef, and William Kentridge.
