About Queens Fort Military Museum

The Queen's Fort Military Museum in Bloemfontein is a national heritage site that chronicles military conflicts in the Free State from the 1800s through to the end of apartheid. While it is a significant historical landmark, potential visitors should note that as of late 2024 and early 2025, it has faced prolonged closures and maintenance challenges due to utility issues. Establishment (1848): Built by Major Henry Douglas Warden following the Battle of Boomplaats to replace Fort Dury. Naming: Named in honour of Queen Victoria. Indoor Displays: Artifacts from the San and Basotho conflicts, the Anglo-Boer War, World Wars I and II, and the South African liberation struggle (Umkhonto we Sizwe and Poqo).
