About Historic Powder Magazine

The Old Powder Magazine in Bathurst, South Africa, is widely regarded as the village's oldest extant building, constructed by the British Royal Engineers in 1821. Originally a core component of a military outpost for British forces during the early settler era, its strategic location on a hill overlooking the town was chosen to provide a secure and tactical vantage point. Built with 60-centimeter-thick stone walls and a unique domed ceiling designed to direct the force of any potential blast upward, it served as a robust arsenal typically housing around 273kg of gunpowder, 7,000 ball cartridges, and 60 rifles.
